Paul Harris – Founder of Rotary

Paul Percy Harris, born on April 19, 1868, in Racine, Wisconsin, founded Rotary with a vision of service and community. Raised in Wallingford by his grandparents, he inherited a spirit of tolerance and dedication.

After earning his law degree in 1891, he traveled extensively, gaining experiences that shaped his vision. In 1900, he married Jean Thomson, who played a key role in Rotary’s growth. An avid reader and writer, his words and ideas remain inspiring.

Paul Harris passed away on January 27, 1947, in Chicago. Today, The Rotary Foundation honors donors of $1,000 as Paul Harris Fellows (PHF) in his memory.

Rotary - Brief History

On 27 February 1896, Paul Harris arrived in Chicago to build his future and began his law practice.

Inspired by the sense of community he experienced in his village, Harris envisioned a fellowship of professionals — one member from each occupation — built on friendship, tolerance, and mutual support.

On 23 February 1905, Paul Harris, Gustavus Loehr, Silvester Schiele, and Hiram Shorey met at Loehr’s office in downtown Chicago for what became the first meeting of Rotary Club.

Harris later served as the third president of the Chicago club (1907–1908) and worked to expand Rotary beyond Chicago. By 1910, Rotary had grown to several major cities across the United States.

Following the success of his idea, Paul Harris expanded Rotary beyond Chicago. The second club was established in San Francisco in 1908, and by 1910, ten more clubs had been formed.

Much of this growth was supported by Chesley R. Perry, whom Harris called “the builder of Rotary International.”

In 1910, 16 Rotary clubs with around 1,800 members came together to form the National Association of Rotary Clubs. Paul Harris was unanimously elected as its president.

He served for two years — the only president to do so — and was later honored as President Emeritus for life.
